How did we get to this point where autism is increasing at such a significant rate?

Autism has been increasing at an alarming rate. But how severe is it? Should we as a society be concerned? In the past 10 years, the number of estimates have risen to 100 in 10000 from 62 in 10000. That's a 60% increase. According to the article "Global prevalence of Autism : A systematic review update", Males are 4 times more likely to develop autism when compared to females and the median percentage of autism cases with co-ocurring intellectual disability was 33%. According to an article from autism speaks titled "New study shows increase in global prevalence of autism", “The increase in autism prevalence around the world reflects in part the impact of public health efforts to raise global awareness of autism spectrum disorder. Since 2012, many regions have also made significant strides in case identification, diagnosis and capacity to serve the autistic community.”

But, what causes autism?

Autism is a complex condition. No exact cause has been identified yet, but researchers are understanding more about the condition over the years. That being said, there are 2 broadly accepted theories, for the probable causes for autism, according to a webpage: Autism Spectrum Disorder by Mayo Clinic

1) Genetics: Several different genes appear to be involved in autism spectrum disorder. For some children, autism spectrum disorder can be associated with a genetic disorder, such as Rett syndrome or fragile X syndrome. For other children, genetic changes (mutations) may increase the risk of autism spectrum disorder. Still other genes may affect brain development or the way that brain cells communicate, or they may determine the severity of symptoms. Some genetic mutations seem to be inherited, while others occur spontaneously.

2)  Environmental factors: Researchers are currently exploring whether factors such as viral infections, medications or complications during pregnancy, or air pollutants play a role in triggering autism spectrum disorder.

How did we get here? The question now is whether autism has increased in rates  over the years, or has the diagnosis techniques become more accurate or a combination of both. We can also consider the increase in sample sizes (from only a few states in the US to an entire global data).
